The Glass Hotel
by Emily St. John Mandel
Published 2020 · 301 pages
Vincent is the bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star glass-and-cedar palace on a remote inlet of Vancouver Island — until the hotel's owner, New York financier Jonathan Alkaitis, hands her his card and she steps into a life of extraordinary wealth. When his investment fund is exposed as a massive Ponzi scheme, the collapse ripples through every life it touched. Emily St. John Mandel's follow-up to Station Eleven is a haunting novel about money, guilt, and the lives we might have lived, shortlisted for the 2020 Scotiabank Giller Prize.

1 reviewThis was really fantastic. The structure of the book is a very clever device that keeps one constantly energized and guessing. Temporal shifts; repeated phrases; a consistent flow of characters coming in and out; living the lives of others while escaping past choices with an eye toward some better life. It's so good that I immediately began to re-listen.
